Back to School Blog

It is almost that time of year again!  Time to pack away the beach towels and pool bags, and time to pull out the backpacks and lunch boxes It’s time to go back to school!  Horry County schools start class on August 22nd, and as an independent insurance agency we want to ensure that your family is prepared, safe, and has peace of mind sending your kids off to school this year.  There is so much to get done, it can be easy to forget about a few things on your to-do list.  Have no fear, Davis & Massey Insurance is here to make sure you have everything ready for the first day of school!  Here are some things to get done and be aware of prior to the first day of class:

1.     School supply shopping can be tedious and expensive.  First, see what school supplies you have left over from previous years before buying new stuff, keep supplies in good condition, and ditch the rest.  Additionally, see if your child's school provides a tailored list to make shopping easier.  Last, try the dollar store, they have everything from pens and pencils to folders and snacks for just one dollar!  As a reminder, tax free weekend starts August 3rd and ends on the 5th, so plan accordingly.

2.     Refresh your wardrobe.  Get rid of any old clothes or shoes that are worn out or no longer fit.  This will eliminate clutter and leave room for any new clothes and shoes you may purchase for the school year.

3.     Make doctors' appointments for any physicals or to get up to date on shots your child may need before they start classes.

4.     Start getting back on schedule.  Sometimes in the summer we like to stay up a little later and wake up for lunch instead of breakfast.  So, it is important to let your body adjust to earlier bedtimes and wake up times to ensure a smooth transition.  It is recommended to start a "school" routine as a family about 2 weeks before the first day.

5.     Get haircuts before the week school starts.  We have all had a last minute bad haircut, so try to go at least a week before.  This way your haircut will still be fresh, and you still have time to fix any "bad haircuts."

6.     Have your kids finally gotten to the age where they can stay home alone?   If so, make sure to make them a copy of the house key to avoid lock outs.  Make an extra copy of the house key to give to a trusted neighbor, just in case.  Also prepare a list of emergency contacts and maybe even a chore list for the kids.

As you can see there's a lot to accomplish in a few short weeks.  Checking off the items on this list will ensure that your family is prepared.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at (843) 839-9229.  At Davis & Massey Insurance we take great pride in ensuring that you’re aware of the best ways to properly prepare yourself and your family.
