Myrtle Beach Auto Insurance

Why do you think auto insurance in Myrtle Beach, SC cost more?  We want to hear from you.  Here are some of the reasons our customers gave.
  • More of a chance for a comprehensive claim (hurricane damage).
  • More teen or young drivers.
  • Myrtle Beach is somewhat of a mini melting pot.  Drivers from different parts of the country don't mesh well together.
  • Tourists don't know where they are going.
  • There are more older drivers (retirees).
  • People have more violations because the police will pull you over for anything.
  • There are lots of people driving late at night, especially during the summer.
Actually, the auto insurance premiums in Myrtle Beach are just a little above the median for the United States.  While some of these things may be true, we cannot confirm how they affect the rates for auto insurance in Myrtle Beach.  It really just comes down to that there are more accidents here than the average city.

Do I need a Personal Umbrella Policy?

To really feel secure about protecting your assets and your future, you may need the extra level of protection provided by personal umbrella liability insurance.  You may also even save on your homeowners policy by purchasing an umbrella policy with a multi-line discount.
An  umbrella policy provides additional layers of liability protection. If the liability limits are exhausted on your home, auto, or other underlying insurance policy, your umbrella insurance policy takes over and provides you with additional protection. The cost is minimal compared to the comfort of knowing you're covered.
Imagine if your dog were to bite a neighbor's child. Or if there's an accident on your rental property. Or a fire in your condo spreads to other units. What would happen if you or a family member missed a stop sign and struck and killed a pedestrian? If any of these things happened to you, there's a good chance your current liability limits wouldn't be adequate to protect your assets—or your future earnings.
A lot of factors determine the amount of coverage you need. Your financial status, lifestyle, and existing coverage are all relevant, but in liability lawsuits, judgements can exceed net worth. Talk to one of our agents to determine what's right for you.

Why does Myrtle Beach Home Insurance cost more?

Almost every day someone asks us why the home insurance premiums in the Myrtle Beach area are more than other areas.  We  are actively writing insurance for all of South Carolina, so we see rates for many cities and towns in our state.  It is true that home insurance is typically more in Myrtle Beach and really in all of the coastal areas of South Carolina.
The obvious reason is the proximity to the ocean and the probability of hurricane or wind damage.  There simply is more of a likelihood that homes in the coastal areas will suffer from wind damage as compared to other ares of the state and that if there is damage it would be more severe.  It may not happen this year or for several years (if we are lucky), but statistics show it will happen.  So insurance carriers have to collect more premium because one day they will be paying it back out in the form of claims.
Another factor, that is out of the carriers' control, is the cost of reinsurance. This factor affects property insurance carriers not only in coastal areas, but even all across the country.  Insurance carriers purchase insurance themselves, called reinsurance, to protect them in case of a very large catastrophe or several catastrophes happening close together.  Reinsurance is vital to a carrier's financial strength and the rates are often globally impacted.  So insurance carriers must adjust their premiums to reflect the cost to purchase reinsurance.
Also, many believe that the lack of competition leads to higher premium.  Many insurance carriers have decided to stop writing new business or even non-renew home policies near the coast.  Of the remaining companies, several will exclude wind and hail damage from their policy - basically forcing their customers to purchase wind and hail coverage through
SCWHUA (SC Wind Pool).  There are only a handful left that will write the traditional Homeowner or Dwelling type policy that includes wind and hail.  Now, this can be debated to wether or not this causes higher premiums.  Some will say it definitely does, while other say that the market should not set the premiums but the statistics or cost of insurance should.

Ways to save on your Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners Insurance in Myrtle Beach can be costly and sometimes hard to find.  Here are some ways to help find Homeowners Insurance and possibly cut your premium substantially.

  • SHOP AROUND.  It may take some time, but this could really pay off.  Contact a local independent agency - they have the ability to shop multiply companies for you.
  • CONSIDER RAISING YOUR DEDUCTIBLES.  Deductibles are the amount of money you have to pay toward a loss before your insurance company starts to pay a claim, according to the terms of your policy.  Generally the higher the deductible the more you can save on your premium.  You should discuss the options with an insurance agent.
  • GET COVERAGE BASED ON REPLACEMENT COST.  The land under the home is not at risk from fire, hurricane, or other covered perils.  So there is no need to include its value when deciding how much homeowners insurance to buy.
  • BUY YOUR HOME AND AUTO POLICIES FROM THE SAME INSURER OR AGENCY.  Lots of carriers offer discounts up to 15% off if you bundle your home and auto policies together.  Just make sure that the combined price isn't more than buying them separately.
  • MAINTAIN A GOOD CREDIT RECORD.  Insurers are increasingly using credit information to price homeowners insurance policies.  Check your credit record on a regular basis and have any errors corrected promptly so that your record remains accurate.
  • SEEK OUT OTHER DISCOUNTS.  Ask your agent if there are any other discounts available.  For example, some carriers offer discounts if you are retired, member of certain organizations, or have an alarm system.
  • INQUIRE ABOUT PAST CLAIMS.  Before you buy a home you should ask the current owner or real estate agent for details on any claims that may have occurred on the property.  You can even request the CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report.
  • MAKE YOUR HOME MORE DISASTER RESISTANT.  Find out from your insurance agent what steps you can take to make your home more resistant to windstorms and other natural disasters. You may be able to save on your premiums by adding storm shutters, reinforcing your roof or buying stronger roofing materials.  Most newer homes in Myrtle Beach were built to code and will automatically qualify for some of these discounts.  Older homes can sometimes be retrofitted.

These are just some ways to save on Homeowners Insurance.  The most important thing is to ask questions and talk to more than just one insurance professional.
